Jonathan Stark, The Artist

Most of my artistic life has been devoted to music. I have been playing the cello since I was five years old and am still playing it today. This music has been mostly classical in nature, although I do have a great liking for jazz, blues, rock, and other genres. In the music I listen to and keep coming back to, I have always found a great balance in how it is put together.

I started working with clay as a way of expanding my artistic avenues and have tried to instill in my art the same sense of balance that I learned to adore in music.
I have found a similar passion for how my forms sit on the plain in which they reside. Should the form emerge from the plain and move up; have a strong sense of stability, feeling rooted or heavy; or have a great sense of tension and imply movement? With these thoughts in mind I look for inspiration in everyday life: in the tension of a water droplet that is about to break free, the way light catches reflective surfaces just right or the mannerisms of a person I know well. Spend some time with my pieces and see if you can find a living breathing presence for yourself.

Here are some pictures of my studio. They are in order showing how some of my recent work turns from wet clay into useable pieces.
